BMW is diversifying its EV ambitions in an effort to capitalize on the electric-vehicle zeitgeist, a process it began with the i3 and i8, a pair of oddballs aimed at hardcore plug-in enthusiasts. But as Nissan has demonstrated with its Leaf, whose forthcoming second generation will hew closer to the design mainstream, there’s a growing appetite for plug-in and electric powertrains in cars wearing well-known names and familiar bodywork. To that end, BMW already had three of those in plug-in hybrid (PHEV) versions of its 3 Series compact sedan, big 7 Series, and X5 crossover; and for 2018 it has added a fourth, based on the mid-size 5 Series: the 2018 BMW 530e xDrive.

Issue: On certain 540d xDrive models, the exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) cooler could crack internally and leak. If this happens, you may notice the following symptoms: a warning symbol in the instrument cluster displaying a loss of coolant, reduced engine power, an unpleasant exhaust odour, an unusual noise from the engine and/or smoke from the engine compartment. Safety Risk: A cracked EGR cooler could create the risk of an engine fire. Corrective Actions: BMW will notify owners by mail and instruct you to take your vehicle to a dealership to replace the EGR module. The dealer will also inspect the intake manifold, and replace it, if necessary.

Issue: On certain vehicles, the rearview camera does not return to the default settings when it turns on. This could make the rearview image difficult to see if a driver had previously adjusted the camera display brightness at or near the lowest setting, and contrast at or near the highest setting. Canadian regulations require that the rearview display returns to the default view each time the camera is turned on. Safety Risk: Reduced rear visibility could increase the risk of a crash. Corrective Actions: The company will notify owners by mail and instruct them to take their vehicle to a dealer to update the software for the rearview camera. Drivers are recommended not to adjust the display brightness at or near the lowest setting, and contrast at or near the highest setting, until this recall is completed.

On certain vehicles, a crankshaft sensor error may cause the engine to stall. This would result in a loss of motive power, which could increase the risk of a crash causing injury and/or damage to property. Correction: Dealers will replace the crankshaft sensor. Note: This condition would result in the illumination of the check engine warning lamp and an “engine malfunction” message appearing in the instrument cluster. Note: This is an expansion of recall 2018-373.

On certain BMW M5 models, the fuel level sensor may contact an in-tank fuel line, causing the fuel gauge to display an incorrect fuel level. This may create a situation where the vehicle could run out of fuel while the gauge still displays that there is fuel remaining. As a result, the engine could stall without warning and increase the risk of a crash causing injury and/or damage to property. Correction: Dealers will secure the fuel line so that it does not contact the fuel level sensor.
